We all get very excited as we hear the word Diwali as it brings the feeling of joy and festive spirit in us. It is a five day long festival celebrated in all parts of our country with a bit of cultural difference and belief, but most of the things like lighting of Diyas and Lakshmi Pujan are the common rituals performed. But have you ever wondered why we light so many Diyas? Why is Diwali considered as the festival of light? This is because Diwali falls on Amavasya Tithi of Kartik month when the two life-giving sources Sun and Moon are not in a good position. The Sun is in a debilitated zodiac (Libra). Because of Amavasya tithi, the Moon is also in a weak position, there is no moon light, and it is the darkest night of the year. So to keep us positive and motivated to remove the darkness from our life through our own efforts we light numerous Diyas.

Let’s begin by knowing the Diwali Muhurat 2023
Diwali 2023: Date & Shubh Muhurat
Diwali means the festival of wealth and prosperity. In this festival, along with Ganesha and Maa Lakshmi, Lord Kuber, Saraswati, and Kali Mata are also worshiped. Worshiping Lord Ganesha on the night of Diwali gives wisdom and knowledge, which inspires a person to earn money. It also increases the understanding of how to properly utilize wealth. Goddess Lakshmi, pleased with her worship, bestows the boon of wealth and Lord Kuber helps in accumulating wealth. Therefore demy god Kuber is also worshiped along with Ganesh Lakshmi on the night of Diwali.
If we talk about the Muhurat, the best time for Lakshmi Pujan is Pradosh kaal (evening time) that starts from sunset and lasts till 2 hours 24 minutes after that. Taurus Lagna is best for domestic happiness, prosperity and growth.
Many people also prefer to worship in Leo Lagna, but in our opinion it’s a more suitable time for people in power or those who do Tantrik Puja.

Deep Daan On Diwali: Significance & Method
Another aspect of Diwali is that it falls on the Amavasya tithi and is an important day for the Pitru Devatas. After visiting the people on Earth during Shradh Paksha, this is the day when our ancestors reach the Pitra Lok, and to show them the direction for a smooth journey, we must perform the famous ‘Deep Daan’ on Diwali.
- Clean the picture of your ancestors, offer yellow or white Chandan then offer white flower or white flower garland to them. Now light the Diya and dhoop in front of them.
- Pray and pay respect to your elders and show gratitude towards them for the life they have given you.
- Offer the clothes, food, sweets, fruits and other necessary items to the priest on this day.
- In the night time, light 14 diyas of ghee in the South West direction for your ancestors.
Deep Daan: Few people are aware of the significant role that Akash Deep Daan plays in our culture in showing our ancestors the way. We have forgotten this activity, but it is one that we should definitely carry out. There are various methods for doing this. For example, you can take a Lamp of Ghee, put a Bati in it that is pointing upwards, then take a small amount of rice under the open sky before covering it with a diya. Light the candle and ask your ancestors for their blessings in the following manner: “Dear Pitra Devtas, I pray to God and wish that this candle/ Diya fills your way with light and helps you reach your destination. I also pray to you to fill my life with your blessings.’ Dear readers, you can also perform the Akash Deep Daan using candle hot air balloons.
